Ray lost her eyes to an organisation who sells organs of children to people who need donors. After being operated on by the famous unliscenced surgeon, Black Jack, she is told by him to choose her way of life. She chose to heal others.
In the start of the series, her ability to see through things is revealed, which makes her a very special cutter since she can see through muscles and cell layers of her patient.
She is normally clad in a white tube, with a black skirt, black work jacket and black shoes. Her white medical kit is carried in her hand where ever she goes. In the first episode her quick and precise cutting skills was revealed when she did surgery on five patients before the ambulance even arrived.
Later on she joins up with a hospital and works there as a doctor. There she meets three nurses and the medical director.
She seems to have a previous tie to the medical director, hearing from her mother that she had been saved by him...
As for her personality, she seems cold and certaintly does not care for fashion or wearing swimsuits, as revealed in the first few episodes. However she does have a drive to heal others, especially those trapped or isolated from others by their diseases.
There is a number on her right shoulder blade, 075-1-74. If you take 75-1-74= 0. Zero is 'rei' in Japanese, so that's how she got called 'Ray'. Her other friends that the organization rears for their organs have names that have got to do with the things/toys they treasure, such as blue socks, blue bead, car, red riddon... etc.
She has another friend called Kouichi. His number is 075-2-22. So the resulting number would be 51, "koujuichi", but its shortened to Kouichi.
