Kanako Urashima is Keitaro's adopted sister and one of the most persistant antagonists in the Love Hina series and manga in her quest to have her brother all to herself. She has loved him ever since they were both little and while she comes off as a goth to everyone else because of her stern voice and seemingly emotionless behavior (some even say she's a witch because her cat Kuro can fly and speak), she will often become humble and caring around her brother. While many of the girls dislike her, Naru and Mutsumi often try to get along with her after she arrives, though her somewhat insultive behavior can wear on one's nerves. Because she is a master of disguise and can seem to become an exact double of anyone, Haruka seems somewhat nervous around her and it's implied only Keitaro can tell it's Kanako. When she appeared, she attempted to make each girl she suspected being in love with her brother as uncomfortable as possible. Even after she lets Naru and Keitaro become a couple, Kanako still exhibits times of wanting him.
In the Manga:
Her parents owned a sweets shop, but Kanako hated sweets, which surprised them. They attempted to have her sample what they wanted to sell, but Keitaro stepped in and explained why she disliked the candies. Ever since then Kanako had loved her "brother" and wanted to be with him. When she arrives at the Hinata Apartments, she tries to destroy the dorm, but is "foiled" by Naru's promise of a compromise of the girls working for her as maids in the "Hinata Inn", as the dorms had once been an inn. Kanako blamed "The Promise Girl" of Keitaro's past for causing her brother to "waste ten years of his life" as he tried and failed to get into Tokyo U and assumed Kitsune was that girl, for which she attempted to kill her. It was only Naru's sudden exclamation that she herself was the girl that saved her best friend. Kanako possibly became disheartened by this, as she had started of thinking of Naru as a friend. After that, Kanako tried several times to Seduce her brother when he returned home. She even led the girls on various chases where she attempted to have her way with him. The promise the two made was to run the Hinata Inn. During the Forbidden Annex Arc, she kept appearing in Keitaro's dreams as his bride.
In the Anime:
It is implied that she was adopted by the Urashima family after her own parents died. We see in the opening theme of Love Hina Again of a younger Kanako being bathed in the hot springs and we get to see a younger version of her and Keitaro shampooing her hair and telling her the story of the Forbidden Annex. Kanako does one thing different from the manga; instead of recruiting a demolishion team to destroy the Hinata Apartments, she found Su's Mecha-Tamas and seemed to have programed them to obey her commands, which were to attack the Hinata girls. She hoped that Keitaro would stay with her forever, but in the end realized Keitaro was truly in love with Naru. Although she lets him go with her blessing, she still shows a great amount of jealousy towards Naru in the end.
Her pet:
Her cat Kuro is called a "monster cat" because he can fly and talk like a person, is quite friendly and polite, despite his owner's personality, seems to be very smart in matters of life, and is even on friendly terms with Tama, who is by then officially Naru's pet. He is considered Kanako's familiar. While black in the manga (as well as having more lines), he is dark purple in the anime. All his lines end in "Meow".

Kanako is Keitaro's seventeen-year-old stepsister who seemed to have fallen in love with him while during one of their baths togehter when they were much younger. The reason she became so attatched to him was because her parents had died and she felt he was the only one she could connect with. Several years later she arrived in Hinata from America and, knowing that Keitaro was now the manager of an all-girls' dorm did several things to unnerve them while impersonating Naru (she is a master of disguise); she molested Motoko, felt up Kitusne, threw out Su's in-door jungle and burnt Sarah's artifacts, and utterly humilated Shinobou in an effort to make them think Naru had lost her mind. She was exposed, however, and became the new manager.
Kanako has a gothic personality and speech towards anyone other than her beloved Keitaro, and after being defended from Kitsune, seemed to think of Naru as a friend until she saw that Naru and Keitaro were in love and spent much of her time trying to confess to her brother that she loved him and "testing" to see if Naru could be honest with her feelings for Keitaro by posing as Kentaro, but tried to strangle her out of frustration when she couldn't get a clear answer, calling Naru pathetic.
