On most aspects, Fuyu Kaede is just about flawless - beautiful, friendly, smart, gets good grades, good at sports, master of all houseworks - but her habit of everything "Rin comes first" has constantly made her became clumsy for herself, for example, got umbrella for Rin but forgot her own. Nonetheless, it's enough for boys in the school to form a fan-club of her and they, naturally, hostile towards Rin.
Kaede and Rin goes back to their childhood days and she practically took care of Rin completely - uber-nice wakeup call, make lunch for Rin, for starters.
But things weren't always as rosy as it is now, in fact, Kaede once hated Rin to the core......8 years ago when her mother died in the accident, she was so devastated that almost lost the will to live, so Rin stepped in and told her a lie - that he was responsible for her mother's and his parents' deaths - it did gave Kaede back a will to live, but in the process, he also made himself the lightning rod for her wrath. Thus, for quite a long time since, Rin - willingly and quietly - took just about all kinds of crap Kaede threw at him everyday, including serious physical harm on many occations. Only when they were at secondary school that Kaede finally learned the truth. Now guilt-strucken, Kaede tried to make up for what she had done to Rin, so much so that taking care of Rin now becomes her sole purpose of living, apart from certain affections towards him.
Before the 2 princesses arrives, relationships between Rin and Kaede remains at very good friends, although Kaede would've want things to advance, the past seems to held her back (so as Rin's inability to see the signs); and it's no suprise that she took it quite hard over that "shocking declaration" by the 2 kings, because it threatens her sense of purpose.
