The previous teacher of the 2-A class of Mahoro all girls middle school, he is a family friend of the Springfield family, and while on campus Negi seems to look up to him like a surrogate father, and a teaching role model.

The Negima equivlant of Seta from Love Hina, but seems to be more aware of situations around him and more often gives more mature advice for life. He is the crush of Asuna's life and one of the things she and Ayaka fight over. Takahata seems to command calm in any situation, causing Negi to wonder if he has what it takes to take over his old class. It's debatable that he and Shizuna are an item.
In the anime;
Takahata appears more often in the anime and almost always seems to be keeping tabs on Negi and his old students. He taught Eiko. It seems he has more of a role as a subordinate to the principal than another teacher and knew Nagi.
In the manga;
He doesn't appear that much and also seems a bit clueless on the goings-on in his old classroom.

An old friend of the Springfield family--Negi addresses him as "Ol' Nut" in the first episode. He is Asuna's crush and former English teacher to her, Ayaka, Nodoka, Konoka, Kufei, Kaede, Evageline, Chachamaru, Fuka, Fumika, Zazi, Mana, Asakura, Shina, Makie, Ako, Yue, Yuna, Haruna, Chizuru, Natsumi, Chisame, and so many others. I say "former", because when Negi arrives, he takes over, hence why Asuna hates the kid so much in the begininng. When Asuna discovers Negi is a mage, she promises not to tell anyone if he helps her find out how Takahata feels about her, unfortunately, Takahata arrives when Negi accidentily sneezes her clothes and then panties off, leaving him to believe Asuna doesn't wear panties, or sometimes wears teddybear panties.
Takahata seems to be somewhat oblivious on what is really going on in the lives of his former students and the young man who now has them for headaches. Poor Asuna seems to be waisting her time, though, since Takahata seems to be involved with Shizuna.

He's Negi's friend and his father's friend as well. Negi standed with him for a well and they got to knew each other. Asuna's got a big crush on him but after Negi came, it seems like Negi's only making Asuna look big in front of him. Negi took over his spot as the teacher of class 2A and what he does around the school, i have no idea. He seems to also know about Negi and Evangeline's magic power so i think he can use magic as well but haven't used it yet.
