Nodoka's closest friend, or so it seems. Yue is one of the "Idiot Rangers" because of her hatred of studying which causes her to perform poorly in classwork, even though she's very intelligent. She always has a sour expression on her face, suggesting her life is fairly dull.
She is the leader of the Baka Rangers. Although she tries to help Nodoka, she also has feelings for him. Despite the fact she's 14, she's as short and young-looking a Negi.
In the anime;
Her personality doesn't change from her manga-self, though she is more likely to be paired with Nodoka most of the time rather than Haruna as she does in the manga. She also seems to have a more adult way of looking at things, despite being 14. Yue confronts Negi after Asuna's funeral and apparently becomes fed up with Nodoka's indecisive ways and confesses her own love for Negi, giving him a seemingly passionate kiss.
As his Pactio partner, she looks like a little witch with a broom and has the Magic Archer attack.
In the manga;
Yue is almost always with Haruna in their quest to help Nodoka confess her feelings for Negi. She is one of the students to realize Negi is a mage in Kyoto and sticks around with Kaede during her battle with the wolfboy Kotarou. Later she would develope an argumentative relationship with him.
It's unknown if she becomes a Pactio partner to Negi in the manga just yet.

Yue is a very serious girl who looks younger than she actually is and a close friend to Nodoka. She supports Nodoka in her longing to tell Negi that she likes him and has to fight back her own feelings for the teacher. Yue is rarely seen out of company with Haruna, her match-maker wannabe friend in their misadventures to help Nodoka, though she isn't as perverted as Haruna tends to become later on in the series. It seems whenever there's a dark place, Yue is always ready with a headlamp; once when she, Negi and the Baka("Idiot")Rangers(she's one of them)get lost in the giant librairy, again when she's helping Nodoka win the "Kiss Negi Contest", and again before she, Haruna, Asakura, Nodoka, and Asuna hear what they suspect might be Evagenline molesting Negi when in fact she was just collecting her "tuiton" from him--his blood.
Although Yue seems to be brilliant, she hates studying.
Always able to act mature and together, Yue can't seem but to act childish and get into arguments with Kotarou, saying that if he denies himself the experience of love and always goes seeking strength, he will never find it. This really gets under Kotarou's skin, since his femininity refuses to allow him to simply hit her in the face for spouting what he considers nonsense; one some level, they have a healthy relationship.

No.4 Ayase Yue, the leader of 'Baka rangers' as well as member of 'Mahora Library Exploration Club' is an intelletual that loathes studying. Her keen interest in philosophy (reflected by her membership in philosphy society) is equalled by her thirst for the mysterious, if not magical aspects of her surrounding.
Yue is an enlightened individual that is both learned and adventurous. Not a person that will let an opportunity slip away. She is a person of integrity and is loyal to her friends. These qualities make her stand as one of the more sound individual in the chaotic class headed by magical Negi Springfield, whose presence only adds to the already magical atmosphere within Mahora...
