Rei is extremely timid, shy and at times almost seems withdrawn from the world around her. She finds it incredibly hard to express her feelings towards others and as a consequence isn't the kind of person who makes friends that easily. All of Rei's personnel records have been erased, she has no parents and there is no trail leading to her past, it would seem that her existence begins at a dead end.
She was the first child to be chosen to pilot an Eva, in particular EVA-00, in accordance with the Marduk institute. Though unfortunately she was seriously injured during her first attempt to synchronise with her Eva when it mysteriously went out of control. Fortunately Commander Ikari rescued her and she survived the accident, her next attempt at synchronisation was successful and she has now become the active pilot of EVA-00. Whether or not this is by choice is unknown, Rei simply seems to do as she is told without complaining, something which Shinji is known for doing.
The truth is though, Rei is in fact not human, that is not entirely. She is a by-product of the human instrumentality project, artificially created and implanted with the soul of Yui Ikari. Rei has only one soul, however, NERV have created multiple bodies, or vessels, for Rei's soul in the event of her death. Indeed Rei is killed twice, by both Naoko Akagi and the sixteenth Angel.

Rei Ayanami ,the first child ,is normally a very shy and silent person, severally injured in her first launchment with the Eva 00 .She is really a clon, with the soul of yui. There are three clons, one,the first is almost not seen at all, the second dies after activating the selfdestruct to destroy the 16 angel.

I like Rei Ayanami because she is actually really close to me. She and I don't value our lives much and don't show emotion as we should but are really progressing in learning to show it. I can't wait to see the rest of the series!

Rei is a very shy person. She also is really pretty and in my perspective is my favorite character in the whole show. Rei always goes with the orders she is given and that's a really good sign but sometime all that people think about her is cold hearted and a someone who has no feelings. Well it kind of relates to me. Maybe that's why her and I were destined to be together.
I am not sure when exactly she was born or anything like that but i really want to know. Rei is someone who you can really talk to...

Ayanami Rei is probably the most emotionally cold charicter ive seen. She does not appear to have any real grasp of human emotions, she never panics and not only does she have no fear of death but she also does not value her life as 'there are always others'.
Despite her cool exterior rei is shown with emotions in some parts of the series however these are usually understated for the situation that she is in at the time. She never really shows friendship to any of the charicters but is seen talking with a smile to gendo ikari on a few occasions a fact that is curious as if anyone in the show could possibly be less friendly it would be gendo.
Despite her many faults rei is more than she appears on many levels and her origins are let us say complicated. rei is always calm in emergencies and becomes more emotional as the series progresses and even appears talking to shinji on many occasions in a friendly manner
