The first see Taro he is at his mothers' grave nad seems to be going to an unknown place when he meets Mariel, the head nurse. She led him to the mansion he's inherited from his grandfather, complete with its one-thousand maid staff! There's one for science, one for defense, one for dining, one for clothing, one for bedding, even one for his bathtimes! Needless to say since he's a middleschooler, all these girls and women proves to be a little too much for him at first and the meeting with Ikyou and her "helpful" invention to keep them away from him for a while doesn't help matters as much as Lemon, Melon and Maron attacking him in his bed at night.
Taro is really mature and kindhearted for someone his age, which is somewhat of why Lemon and her sisters like him so much; he's also been able to make Yashima blush as well as annoy her when he keeps calling her by her last name. Even though he's surrounded by some maids that are close to his age, it's sometimes evident that he has a crush on Mariel, the head maid and sometimes gets a bit too close to her for his own comfort. After a one-thousand game "war" between Mariel and Ryuka to see who would have the right to marry Taro, Mariel won, which causes him some embarassment.
The reason he's around them all is because he is their master; he's an heir to the Hanaukyo family.

Until his mother died, Tarou lived a normal enough life. With no relatives except for the grandfather he've never met, Tarou sets out to find him, who lived deep in the hills. But to his great suprise (not to mention, horror), what he discovered were that the place is an estate that's fit for a king, and an army of beautiful maids who's duty is to serve him.
If that's not enough, he found out from Marial, the head maid, that his grandfather leaves him, the only heir of the family, all the family's fortune and made him head of the Hanaukyo family, a rich and powerful family that owns half of Japan.
