The fierce demon Vice Commander of the Shinsengumi. He is known for his strict and coldhearted ness and is feared by even his own people. He trained under Kondo's dojo before joining the Shinsengumi. In contrast of the mild-mannered Isami Kodo, he serves to tighten things up, and he leads the organization coolly and sternly. He is a good swordsman, but he also fights an information war day and night in order to detect plots by Choshu clansmen and to get the initiative on them. He and Yamanami never seems to agree on anything because of their difference believes. He took Tetsunosuke in to become his page but does not allow him to become a Shinsengumi member.
External Characteristics:
Hairstyle consists of simply tying back his pitch black hair. His bangs lightly fall on his chiseled face. Wearing a kimono with the chest slightly open shows a bit of masculine sex appeal. The pipe he uses for when he is troubled or deep in thought is also an important item.
Internal Characteristics:
He feels guilt for drawing Okita into a world of blood and carnage. His asking Yamazaki, his subordinate, whether he is fulfilling his duties as a Vice Commander shows his modesty. In contrast to his general image as a leader with integrity, he also has a hidden gental side to him and casually shows his considerateness once in a while.
Position: Shinsengumi Vice Commander. Originally from Tama subprefecture in Bushu. He helped the Commander Isami Kondo to establish and develop the Shinsengumi. He watches over his page, Tetsunosuke Ichimura, with a stern eye.

Note: Based on the actual historical figure Hijikata Toshizo of the Shinsengumi police during the late shogunate period and the Meiji Restoration.
Hijikata Touzou is the deputy leader, or vice captain, of the Shinsengumi. His strict, calm demeanor gains him the nickname "The Demon of Shinsengumi", though another side of him is revealed throughout the anime. (Tetsunosuke comes to him for acceptance into the Shinsengumi but instead becomes his page) Hijikata is a skilled swordsman, and is usually seen smoking a pipe.

He's the Vice-commmander of the Shinsengumi, and a very cold and ominous man. He is feared by the other members as a monster.
