Hachimaki is an nickname given by his former sensei (teacher) because he wears one while he's at work (the headband). His sensei says the hachimaki acts like a switch and gives him the determination to do what needs to be done without fail. Hachimaki's real name is Hachirota Hoshino. His father is an astronaut and this probably played some role in his desire to become one as well. He has a crush on Tanabe, but doesn't want to admit it, especially after she nicknamed him "Diaper Man" since he accidentaly greeted her in a diaper and upper-half of a spacesuit.
Hachimaki is an "EVA Specialist" for the Debris Section. In other words, he actually goes out into space in a space suit and collects the debris manually. He also pilots a "Fishbone" when needed. A Fishbone is basically a small metal box frame with engines on it used to give astronauts something to anchor to and give more push when collecting larger pieces of debris.
