Relena Darlian

Go back to character page

Relena enters Gundam Wing on a rather brattish way, when she complains to her father ot being able to spend much time with her. Kinda gives the impression of a spoilt girl, which she is...Until she meets Heero Yuy, who immediatly steals her heart, but even so, only complicates her life. All attempts to get closer to him fail; the first episode ends for instance with Heero tearing up an invitation for Relena's party in honour of her 16th Birthday. Suprisingly, Relena's tears ar tenderly wiped off by Heero not even a second later. But when she thinks he's trying to comfort her, guess again: Heero simply informs her again a second later he'll kill her. Relena didn't need much time to realize why that is. After all, she knows Heero is not your average kind of young boy.

Nevertheless, Heero and Relena are linked no matter what happens. When she runs off from her own birthday party, in a well-suited blue dress, after hearing one of her classmates thought he saw Heero drive towards the marina in an ambulance.
Arriving there, Relena sees Heero rigging deepwater torpedoes. why he's doing that, she doesn't know, but even so she tries to reason with him. Again Heero's answer (Relena's name) is almost tender, and a blink of an eye later, Relena faces the black barrel of a gun. At this stage, Relena fears Heero as much as she loves him, proven by the tending of Heero's wounds when Duo Maxwell shoots down Heero, misinterpreting the situation, right before Heero was to pull the trigger on Relena.

The next episode, Relena is the one that shrugs Heero to act, when he and Duo jump from the 52nd floor of a military hospital; Duo with a sort of helicopter device, Heero with the good old prachute. But instead of opening it, he just jumps and lets gravity do his work. Relena intervention makes Heero act instinctively and his leap of faith is broken.

Relena's professional life stops her from running after Heero, for she goes with her father on another trip to outer space. But when OZ office Une places a bomb to kill vice foreign Minister Darlian - she concealed it in het powder box-, Relena becomes an unwanted witness.
If that shock wasn't enough, the confessions Darlian made before he succumbed to his wounds knocked her right of her feet. Darlian reveals that Relena is in fact one of two siblings that descend from the Peacecraft Family, the former sovereign of Sanc Kingdom.

Other revelations, made by Dr. J this time, meant to convince Relena she better believes what her "father" said, have an adverse effect. More than ever now Relena is determined to confront Heero, and accepting she can play an important role in bringing peace to the world an outer space.

Back on Earth, she invites Heero to the School dance, as a last request before Heero can kill her.
During that dance, Relena admits she feels no regrets anymore and states she's on Heero's side. This catches the young Gundam Pilot on, but before he can get his questions on line, Lady Une engages the Saint Gabriel Institute.

Heero, not knowing it's for Relena they came, runs off and gears up his Gundam. Relena on her hand, helps her friends to get out safely, but more because she wants to be alone with Heero, rather than just being aiding.

Here we get another view of the deep love Heero and Relena have for one another: A miss from an Aries threatens to be the death of Relena, as parts of one of the Institutes towers fall down. But to mostly Heero's surprise, Relena is saved as he plants the Wing Gundam shield over Relena.

Heero is confused; why can't he kill her?

After that, Relena and Heero sort of get on with their own life, only sporadically seeing each other.
As for Relena, she takes back her birthright by representing the Sanc Kingdom on a meeting by the Romefeller Foundation, symbolically gets her revenge on a dance in Moscow by shooting off the rose on Lady Unes uniform (the one she holds responsible for her "fathers" death) and gets re-instated as the monarch of the Sanc Kingdom, after Zechs Merquise is able to bring down the Alliance forces stationed there.

Relena learns about the truth behind the mask as Heero confronts Zechs on the Antarctica ice shelf in a pointless duel, when she blocks Zechses path and orders him, as the Princess of Sanc Kingdom, tos stand down, and reclaim his title of Knight of the Kingdom. At this stage, Noin reveals Zechses true identity.

During the rest of the series, Relena takes on the role of Princess of Sanc Kingdom and Director of the private school, where she gives lectures concerning her ideals about peace.
Not much later, as Sanc Kingdom collapses, she reluctantly accepts to step forward and act as the new chief representative of Romefeller, receiving the title of Queen of the World. But Relena's strong personality causes that the reason behind her office gets blurred. Romefeller wants to give in to Relena's ideals of peace, while Duke Dermail only intended to use her as a decoy to give Romefeller more power.

Long did Relena's rule not last; the Death of Duke Dermail while leading the Space Forces, the ascencion of White Fang, led by Quinze and Milliardo Peacecraft, makes Relena's position very unstable. Treize Khushrenada seizes this opportunity and forces Romefeller to appoint him as the new chief representative. Relena is free to go, but nevertheless gets to outer space, seeking to discuss things over with her brother. As that fails, Heero rescues her and promises Milliardo in silent to look after her, even when he and Milliardo were to face each other as nothing else but enemies.

Relena returns, after an emotional goodbye (where Heero lets down his guard and asking her to believe in him, to MO II and sees how Libra is destroyed by the Gundams, and the final blow being delivered by Heero.

After this, Relena accepts to take Mr Darlians place as vice foreign minister, while Heero finally makes up with her, by gifting a small teddy bear with a red bow tie.

In Endless Waltz, Relena is now 17, she gets caught in the middle of the action as she's abducted by Marimeia, who claims to be Treizes daughter. Relena has to use all of her strength, wisdom and charachter to make Marimeia realize this is not what her father wanted as she re-initiates Operation Meteor.
Heero uses this opportunity to come full circle wuth his humanity by symbolically kill Marimeia, before fainting in Relena's arms.

From here on, the story remains open for debate: What happens next?
For those that have seen the four episodes entitled Operation Meteor (2 even, 2 odd episodes), they kow hat at one point, Relena cried of joy when she sees Heero survive re-entry at the end of Episode 49: The Final Victor. Later they even end up pretty close, but whether or not they kissed, remains a mystery for a long, long, long time.

Relena has a soft, lightly tanned skin, blue eyes and dark blonde hair, she usually wears in a ponytail or with a small braid in her hair. We also saw het once with a carré, but only at the end of episode 49.

She became renowned because she always walked around or in fancy dresses, or in a very short skirt.
Her personality evolves from brattish to compassionate, over mature and acceptive, to a grown, strong-minded woman. Only thing left for her is the love of Heero.

When Relena first met Heero she thought that Heero could ease her loneliness. She then sort of tries to track Heero down, randomly screaming "HEEEERROOO!!!!" So anyways she becomes Queen Relena of Sanc Kingdom and then the Vice Foreign Minister. Relena is actually really rich and her real name is Relena Peacecraft.
