In the world of ninja, there are a few ranks. If you choose to start your life as a ninja, first you must enter the ninja academy at an early age. From there you graduate, get your ninja headband and become a genin.
And then you train, do missions and raise your rank to a chunnin. Then jounin. After jounin you may be able to become an ANBU. And if you're very good at ninja and decision makings you can become the highest rank: The Hokage. (And the Hokage is a very hard title to earn).
Iruka is the teacher of these younglings that enter the ninja academy (the lowest rank). He teaches them basic ninja skills and such.
He has a kind nature and is the very first person to ever acknowlege Naruto as naruto. Born as an orphan himself, Iruka has full understanding of the word "loneliness".

Umino Iruka is at the Chuunin level, and teaches at the ninja academy. He and Uzumaki Naruto share a close bond, because he sees himself in Naruto. He is a fatherly figure for him and treats him to Ichiraku Ramen frequently. His parents were killed by Kyuubi when he was a child. Iruka is a kind person who tends to worry too much about others.

Umino Iruka
A Chuunin level ninja, he is an instructor at the ninja academy. Introduced as Naruto's sensei, he and Naruto have a special connection. Iruka sees himself in Naruto because he also grew up as an orphan and was around Naruto's age when his parents were killed by the Kyubi. Naruto cares for him because Iruka was the first person to acknowledge him as a precious person. Worrying that Naruto is being pushed too hard, Iruka often underestimates Naruto's abilities during his trials to become a great ninja. He is now Konohamaru's teacher. The name "Umino" means "of the sea" and "Iruka" means "a dolphin".
