Folken is Van's older brother. But peapole thought he died by the hand of a dragon he was suposed to kill as a part of a ritual the royals of Fanilia are suposed to do, by that they gain the possesion of Escaflowne. The dragon bit of his arm so in any normal manner he should have died but instead Issac the "evil" emporor who has superior tecnoligy made him a new one of Meccha so under the condisons that he would swear his ties with Fanilia and plege his loyalty to him and so he did. He is one of the main enemys in the story.....

Van's brother, Folken was originally the heir to the Fanelian throne. However, he failed to complete the rite of passage for all kings-- killing a dragon and bringing its energy source, or Energist, back-- and has since disappeared from common knowledge. He reappeared in the war, but on the side of Van's enemies. While Van is confused and angry about his brother's actions, Folken silently plots his own fate.
